Jan Kaláb

Bio

Jan Kaláb (*1978, Praha) is a graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design (1997–1998 architecture, prof. Eva Jiřičná; 2000–2002, sculpture, prof. Jiří Beránek) and the Academy of Fine Arts (2002–2006, drawing, prof. Jitka Svobodová), both in Prague. He is a member of the older generation of graffiti writers in the Czech Republic. Besides his classical graffiti art showing his distinctive talent for dynamic and colorfully playful composition, he is also known for the sculptures and objects of varying shapes that he has installed in the public space. In 2001, he created the world’s first 3D graffiti. Kaláb is not afraid to experiment, thanks to which he has successfully pushed the boundaries of his field. He has participated in countless exhibitions and festivals in the Czech Republic and abroad, and his works can be found in the collections of leading public and private galleries. Today, he focuses on the visual exploration of abstract geometric patterns in two and three dimensions. He is also interested in the relationship between the dynamism of geometrically constructed contours and the intensity of colors use to fill them. Elsewhere, he finds new and surprising possibilities for abstract expression.
